Abroad, an evening ritual based on extra-virgin olive oil and fresh lemon juice is becoming popular. It is considered an antioxidant and mildly purifying blend and is said to aid digestion, regulate bowel function, and promote deeper sleep, while also supporting the immune system and collagen production. The oil is believed to help lubricate the intestinal tract, while the lemon is thought to stimulate gastric juices.
In the wellness sphere, the drink is attributed draining and detoxifying properties, as well as benefits for the liver, heart, joints, and cholesterol levels. Evening is indicated as the ideal time because, according to influencers, olive oil contains small amounts of compounds linked to the sleep–wake cycle and, together with its satiating effect, may promote relaxation; more efficient digestion could also reduce bloating and nighttime discomfort.
Does it work? From a scientific standpoint, the benefits of the two ingredients when consumed separately are well known. The vitamin C in lemon is important for collagen production and immune function, but there is no evidence that taking it in the evening makes a real difference if daily intake is already adequate. Likewise, the amounts of melatonin in olive oil are too low to influence sleep, and claims about liver “detoxification” lack solid scientific support.
In general, a healthy lifestyle, a balanced Mediterranean diet, and regular physical activity remain the most effective strategies. However, for those who wish to try it—except in cases of gastritis or reflux—it is enough to mix one tablespoon of oil with the juice of half a lemon (if too intense, it can be diluted with water).
