In Slovenia, the world’s first olive oil fountain: a new gastronomic and cultural attractionIn the small village of Marezige, near Koper, on the occasion of World Olive Day in November, the world’s first olive oil fountain was inaugurated—an initiative that combines tourism, taste, and Mediterranean tradition.
Located next to a local venue so that it can serve as a permanent tasting space, at its inauguration it allowed visitors to sample different local extra virgin olive oils produced by three companies (Pr’ Rojcu, Sveti Kancijan and Sabadin). Award-winning oils from recent competitions were also available, offering the opportunity to discover the characteristics of Istrian oils. With the purchase of a set of three tokens, visitors receive an olive wood tray for the oil as well as a glass for the nearby wine fountain; packaged bread is included, while cheese tastings are available at an additional cost. A specialty shop offers various olive-based dishes and bottled oils.
Beyond tastings, the initiative also serves an educational and social purpose: it aims to be a meeting place to explain production processes and the centuries-old history of olive growing in the region, promoting the local culinary heritage. With this opening, Marezige adds a unique attraction to its tourist offer and demonstrates Slovenia’s commitment to promoting excellence in extra virgin olive oil.
